Christianity and the Crisis of the University

With Dr. Jessica Hooten Wilson

Is a university degree anything more than a pathway to a good job? What is the purpose of education? And what should be the mission of a university? In a time when universities view students as customers and education as credentialing, the Christian tradition offers us a vision of apprenticeship oriented toward a contemplative life of virtue. How can students and scholars in the modern university pursue this vision for all it’s worth?

Public Reading of Scripture

Join us journey through the entire Bible together and share a meal after! The Bible is a masterpiece of world literature and of immense historical significance. We welcome all to join regardless of religious affiliations.

As we listen to the text being read aloud, we are automatically forced slow down and only read at the pace of the reader. Reading scripture aloud in community is an ancient practice, before books were widely distributed (or easily replicated) the main way these texts were shared was as they were read aloud in group settings.

Great Texts of the Christian Tradition: Orthodoxy

Orthodoxy by G. K. Chesterton is a classic that every Christian should read. Chesterton tells how he set out to invent a new philosophy of his own and found that he had arrived back at historic Christianity. In it, Chesterton argues that the Christian faith makes more sense of reason, wonder, and the human condition than the modern ideas that tried to replace it.

Each week, we’ll listen to a chapter together over a free lunch and then talk about it. There’s no homework, just show up and you’ll have read one of the great classics of the Christian faith.

When
Every Wednesday, 12–1:15 PM, starting October 14
